A special place on a special island
Sheila and I stayed at Taxiarchis Hotel in Symi for 2 weeks in late September 2024. Frank, the owner, met us at the harbour when the ferry pulled in and drove us up the hill to the Horio (village) where the hotel is.
Our apartment room was large, clean and spacious, the bedroom was cool on the warm nights and the view from the deck area was sublime, looking over Pedi Bay, the rugged Symi hills and beyond to Turkey. Frank, Eva and their family run this quiet, friendly accommodation with skill, care and friendliness.
The breakfast was excellent (Eva's omlettes are special) and our room was cleaned, with new linen and towels, everyday (except Sundays).
Symi town is draped over a very steep hillside so we usually walked down to the harbour or to Pedi and caught the local bus (E2.50) or a taxi (E5) back up the hill - easy.
One day we chartered Frank's lovely launch to explore the further reaches of the island. Frank and Eva took us to some beautiful and remote swimming areas and provided us with a picnic lunch and wine.
Taxiarchis is a special place and we were the only guests who hadn't stayed before, such is its allure. It's the perfect place from which to enjoy the beautiful town of Symi and its gorgeous swimming spots, mostly accessible by regular water taxis. A special place on a special island. We'll be back.
PS: There are no downsides in our opinion but I should point out that the hills in Symi are very steep so mobility could be an issue for some.

Perfect
Perfectly located in the village. A 15 minute walk takes you to Pedi bay or in the other direction 15 minutes down the 365 steps to the harbour. Either direction is a beautiful walk that doesn’t need to be rushed. We stayed in one of the studios which was modern and looked recently refurbished. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed an evening drink on the terrace overlooking Pedi. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of variety. Rooms were thoroughly cleaned daily and were spotless. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

Perfect
Frank and his loverly family run this wonderful hotel brilliantly. Rooms immaculately cleaned every day, with gorgeous views towards Pedi and the stunning moutains. Breakfast has a choice of fresh pastries, yoghurt with honey, fresh fruit, and omelettes cooked to order (omelette with bacon the best), fresh coffee, juice and iced water. Nothing is too much for Frank he picked us up from the port and dropped our baggage back down there. Great location ideally situated in the village. Well placed for access to both the port and Pedi beach, albeit a 20 minute uphill trek back, but regular buses if you don't want to walk. Would definitely stay again, loved it!

My initial “what have I done” turned to falling in love with Symi, thankful for the hotels location
I booked this last minute holiday for me and my 18 month old daughter via Olympic. As our flight to Rhodes was late Olympic put us up in a hotel in Rhodes. Our ferry the next day was fab. Upon arrival at the port we were greeted and transferred to the hotel. We were dropped off on a main road at the foot of a steep hill; me pushing my toddler in her pram with one hand, her suitcase under the pram whilst pulling my own case up the hill in the blazing heat to the hotel reception. View was amazing but I did think Oh no, what have I done?! The room was large but very basic. I had wanted to prep some meals in the room but it just wasn’t viable. Nowhere to prep the food and insufficient utensils. No microwave. I knew about the tourist tax. AC I had read some reviews saying free whilst others said €50 per week. I was quite astounded when I was told upon check in that it was €10 per night and they only take cash (despite a list of accepted cards stuck to the reception door). So €140 was a huge ask. Later found out it’s free for booking.com guests but €10 per day for Olympic guests. Breakfast was also €10ppp day. Amazing spread and worth having a few times but otherwise I bought cereal and porridge for the room. I lasted 3 nights without AC before I caved! It was unbearable. I also initially struggled with the concept that we’d have to bus it every time we wanted to go to symi town or pedi. €2.50 each way. taxi boats to go to a decent beach (as I wasn’t initially too impressed with pedi beach) cost upwards of €8 then sun beds (needed for my toddler) averaging €8. This wasn’t really the kind of place you could nip back to your room after a day of sunbathing and head back out all dolled up without adding more money to your day. All this before food and drink. I ended up packing a rucksack each day with our sunbathing supplies, food and drinks. So as I say, initially I struggled with all this and felt quite like what have I done. But you know what, aside from the cost, all the transport made it an adventure for me and my little girl. She LOVED the bus driver and the taxi boat fellas. And these journeys helped break up her day. She’d have been bored on a conventional holiday sat by a pool for 8-10 hours. Not least it probably would’ve been harder work for me! We loved this place. Everything became a positive once we found our groove. I felt blessed we were at the top of the hill. I pushed her in her pram numerous times down to pedi. I grew to actually love the left beach at pedi, watching the wee old woman gut the squid everyday. We loved the blue cafe too - the owner was amazing. We spent a few evenings in the restaurants near the hotel. The restaurant/bar scena had a kids play area. Symi town had a huge kids play area in the square. Both were invaluable! I dared leave the pram one evening as I wanted us to walk down the hundreds of steps of the Kali Strata, the top of which was so incredibly close to our apartments. My little girl loved stopping to look at the many cats! That kept us busy for a good while! we always got the bus back up the hill everyone was so friendly. My little girl made so many friends; locals sat on their balcony’s each day, she’d make us stop to chat with them even though they didn’t know English nor I Greek, and she’d blow kisses to them whilst they blew kisses back to her. They all loved her. Never have I ever been somewhere just so welcoming. I didn’t want to leave! And let’s not forget the hotel owners. Family run. Frank and wife, their daughter and granddaughter (she also doted on my daughter). They were all lovely. Added to all this my daughter is mad on wildlife. Next to the hotel is home to a horse. We saw a bearded dragon at one of the beaches, saw a yellow spotted puffer fish at another beach, an octopus and a sea centipede at pedi beach, mountain goats, lizards, a praying mantis became resident for a few nights at our room and not forgetting the many many cats and kittens Being up the top of the hill gave us such a range of options whether it was busy Symi town harbour or the sleepier pace of pedi or a chilled stroll down the kali strata stopping in one of the bars for a beer. I cannot wait to return. It was magical. NB my wonderful Cockney neighbour bought my daughter a little paddling pool for our veranda. So kind and such a blessing to have

Self catering. Getting the basics right.
My wife and I have stayed at these apartments on more than one occasion, each time choosing to go self catering. However, i think they fail to get the basics right when providing for this kind of holiday. I spoke to a few clients regarding this and we were all of the same opinion. Here are a number of items that were not available that I had to ask for at reception. Scourer, tea towel, washing up liquid. Chopping board, glasses, bread knife. Just small items I know, but make a difference. Also, the bits in the fridge that keep the milk, water etc in place were missing limiting the number of items you can put in the fridge. No dust pan and brush available. Taxiarchis are lovely apartments. In a lovely location. Even though the rooms are kept nice and clean the decor and furnishings look tired and dated. Just another thing. It did mention on our booking that air conditioning would be an extra cost. We were told it would cost an extra £10 per day, so £100 over our 10 day visit. But when I handed them money in cash I was charged an extra £15 for tax charges??? Just thought people should be made aware of.
